Off-the-beaten-path Guangxi

Cycle Canton is excited to announce a NEW trip. Join us from Tuesday 3 to Sunday 8 August 2021 on our ‘Off-the-beaten-path Guangxi' adventure! Stay away from the crowds, and spend your summer holiday exploring the hidden gems of Guangxi province. On this 6-day journey we explore the less-traveled karst  mountain areas of northeastern Guangxi, and do a variety of outdoor activities. We go cycling, hiking, canyoning, swimming, river rafting, and see ancient villages, minority clans, caves, and lots more! We stay at quality, boutique hotels, including two with a large swimming pool. Each day we offer several activities, some more for adventurists, other for families and children. You may choose, depending on what you feel like that day. We are always in, on or near the water, so we'll stay cool. Join this adventure, enjoy the beautiful landscapes, and have fun!

Leaving Guangzhou South railway station in the morning, we arrive in Guilin around noon, where a 1-hour transfer is arranged to the hotel in Daxu village. In the afternoon we have the option to explore the old town, visit Maozhou Island, go for a bike ride of 10 or 20km, or cool off for a swim in the clean river. We all meet for dinner in the hotel, overlooking the Li River, and do introductions over drinks.

Daxu is a fine example of an old world Southern Chinese river town, with cobblestone lanes, a 400 year-old stone arch bridge and people still living in wooden dwellings roofed in black tiles. In its heyday it was one of the more important trading towns linking the north via the Yangtze River to Guangzhou. Now, it is a rural farming centre with several tributaries to the Li River, featuring cycling paths through villages and fields.

Two options for you today! Either a 30km cycle ride, or a 10km hike. The cycle ride is exceptionally beautiful, following cycling paths and quiet countryside roads. We ride across some small hills that offer spectacular views. The last part of the ride takes us over some cliffside backroads, overlooking the Li River. The hike offers some of the same stunning views. Both cycling and hiking groups finish with a shared lunch, followed by a 1-hour boat ride on the most spectacular part of the Li River. It brings us to Nine Horse Frescoe hill, where we take electric carts to the hotel that overlooks the old town where we have dinner.

Today we all go canyoning! We climb up a local mountain stream and are accompanied by local professionals who provide all necessary gear (except water shoes). We bring along a lunch that we enjoy by one of the pools along the way. Later in the afternoon we can relax by the hotel's swimming pool or dive in the Li River. We finish the day with a BBQ at the hotel.

Today we go cycling, through old towns and valleys, past rivers and mountains. We pass through rural karst scenery that not many get to see. We visit an ancient village, explore its buildings, could go for a quick swim before continuing on for the ride. Lunch will be together nearby the Yulong River. Cycling options of 20-40-60km, the latter with off road sections, are available.

Today is a free day in Yangshuo, where you have the chance to pick one of your favorite activities. There are options for cooking classes, kayaking, rock climbing, via ferratta, hiking, taichi, or more cycling. You may also take some free time for swimming or walking in the valley. The last night we organize a dinner with live music and drinks!

Today is our last day of the trip. You may spend more time in Yangshuo, exploring the village and its beautiful surroundings, or head back sooner. Transport to the Yangshuo Highspeed railway station is arranged at set times.

Hotels are modern, comfortable, clean, beautifully located and as full of local character as one can find. All rooms feature private bathrooms, hot water, ac, etc. The sleeping arrangements are for twin share (though you can request a double for couples) and if you are a single traveller you will be paired up with someone of the same gender, unless you decide to book a single supplement. For families we try to provide family rooms, or adjoining rooms, where available.

Food is an important part of this trip, and we give you every opportunity to sample the local specialities, so you enjoy the experience of eating like a local! Most of the food is Chinese (not spicy), but Western options are available at some restaurants as well. Besides flavour, the comfort of and view from the restaurants are well-taken care of. We also provide snack food for morning and afternoon breaks with biscuits, fresh fruit, dried fruit, tea, coffee, water and other drinks. Vegetarians vegans are well catered for; just let us know your dietary restrictions. Meals are included in the cost, except for lunch on day 5 and 6. The meals are always very generous, the food is healthy, very fresh and very tasty!

Our local partners have put together this amazing trip in their backyard of Yangshuo. Run by an Australian and Chinese, this team has run cycling adventures throughout China and Asia for nearly 20 years, hosting international and domestic guests. Together with the Cycle Canton team, we make sure you and your bikes run smoothly, your bellies are full and you learn the insights of the region and its people. Mountain bikes are all of international brands, available in all sorts of adult and child sizes, and in excellent condition. Backup vehicles are with us at all times, and you are always welcome to catch a ride if you feel worn out. The team has Wilderness Advanced First Aid (WAFA) level training, is well-organised and keen to show us the hidden gems of rural Guangxi!
